3 Powerful Strategies to Boost Your Child’s Literacy Skills This Summer
School’s out for summer! Parents, summer vacation is finally upon us. What plans do you have for your children over the summer break? Road trips, family vacations, summer camp, summer tutoring or just staying home for some much-needed family time. We have all heard about the infamous “summer slide” syndrome. Summer slide basically is a theory that states, students lose at least two months’ worth of instruction over the summer due to not being in school. I can help you solve that problem. If you are concerned about “summer slide” I will give you 3 ways to enhance literacy development over the summer.
Read
Sounds simple right? Reading over the summer is the easiest and cheapest way to help prevent summer slide. This can be as easy as planning weekly trips to the library. Check with your local library for weekly story time events. Next, play reading games. There are a ton of free online literacy resources in which your child can play literacy games or have access to free online libraries. Lastly, various stores, restaurants and organizations offer summer reading programs. Click the link to the following companies to find out more information regarding their summer reading programs:

Writing
Wait…what? Writing? Reading and writing skills go hand in hand. Pair your child up with a pen pal for the summer, it could be their best friend or another peer their age. In addition, have them write an “old school” letter, with pen, paper, envelope, stamp and put in the good old snail mail. This process will help them learn formal writing skills and help with language arts skills. Lastly, have your child keep a journal. There are several types of journals that they can keep, for instance, travel journals, reading journals, nature journals, sports journals, etc.
Summer Tutoring
The final way to enhance literacy development over the summer is to hire a tutor. There are so many benefits to summer tutoring. For example, summer tutoring is individualized, tutors are able to pinpoint specific deficits and create an individualized lesson plan for your child. Also, tutoring sessions are 1:1. 1:1 sessions will get the fastest results because unlike the classroom, in which the ratio is 25:1, tutoring sessions are 1:1 or 3:1 which will guarantee a more intentional focus on your child’s literacy needs. Lastly, tutoring sessions will be focused on YOUR child’s needs. Each session will focus on the area of concern and will be skills based in order to get the fastest results with continued progress monitoring.
