3 Reasons Why You Need to Hire a Summer Tutor

The end of the school year is fast approaching and summer will be here before you know it. We are all busy making summer plans for travel, vacations, relaxing, and keeping the kids entertained BUT have you thought about summer tutoring? We have all heard about the infamous “summer slide” syndrome. Summer slide basically is a theory that states students lose at least two month’s worth of instruction over the summer due to not being in school. I can help you solve that problem. To prevent “summer slide” I suggest you hire a tutor for the summer. I will give you 2 reasons why you should hire a summer tutor.

Summer tutoring is individualized

Unlike summer school at a brick-and-mortar, with a tutor your child’s tutor will make sessions individualized to focus on your child’s individual needs. Most tutors will give initial assessments to see where students are and then build the sessions based on their individualized needs.

Tutor Sessions are 1:1

When your child is in the classroom, the teacher to student ratio is usually 25:1 or in some cases more.  However, in a tutoring session the majority of the time the teacher student ratio is 1:1 or in some cases tutors have pods that are no more than 3:1. Working with students 1:1 gets the fastest results.  When students are in a 1:1 setting or small group the teacher is able to really focus on your child. There are no other classwide or school wide distractions i.e., announcements, phone calls, behavior redirection, etc. A tutor is able to spend uninterrupted time with your child. Tutoring sessions are on a time constraint so you want to get as much done in that time frame as you can.

Tutoring sessions will be focused on YOUR child’s literacy needs

As I mentioned earlier, tutoring sessions will be tailored to YOUR child’s literacy needs and not based on what the class or grade level as a whole needs. Tutors are able to pinpoint specific deficits and give diagnostic assessments, analyze the data and create individualized lesson plans for your child. For instance, if letter recognition is a deficit we will focus on that skill in the tutoring session using all modalities (visual, auditory and tactile) for literacy activities.

There you have it. Those are my 3 reasons why you should hire a summer tutor. If you need a reading tutor for the summer click the getting started link to schedule a tutoring session.
